Vic; Motorcyclist dies in crash

MELBOURNE, Dec 24 AAP - Victoria has recorded its first road fatality of the christmas
holiday season with the death of a motorcyclist after a smash in Melbourne's southeast.

Police said the motorcyclist, a 23-year-old man, died in the Alfred Hospital trauma
unit, where he was taken following a collision with a station wagon at an intersection
in Carnegie about 12.30pm.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said the occupants of the station wagon escaped
injury in the crash at the intersection of Neerim and Truganini Roads.

The man's death took Victoria's road toll for 1999 to 273, five fewer than at the
same time last year, police said.
