Fed: Clark to defend position at board meeting

CANBERRA, Aug 15 AAP - ATSIC chairman Geoff Clark appears likely to remain in the top
job, with an anticipated no confidence motion unlikely to be raised among board members.

Mr Clark's deputy, Ray Robinson, had been expected to raise the motion at today's meeting
in Canberra, but ruled it out.

"There'll be no vote taking place and we're just going to have a discussion about it,
that's all," Mr Robinson told ABC radio.

Mr Clark has refused to stand down from his elected position as the leader of the Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Commission while he faces sexual assault charges.

He faces five charges, including rape and aggravated rape, relating to an alleged incident
20 years ago.

Mr Clark was confident of ATSIC support and urged the board to get on with the job.

"I expect to walk in as the chairman and walk out as the chairman," Mr Clark told ABC radio.

"I think the issues here are very clear.

"ATSIC needs to concentrate on what it's been elected to do."

Board meetings continue in Canberra until Thursday.
